One of my best friends did her best to search the scriptures and found out that God do not support or allow us to cut ourselves in whatever form. She wrote this to me because she was thinking about my book titled, The Scarification: The Facial Scarification in South Sudan, and she was wondering if the Bible allows this or not. Indeed, my point of writing is to narrate what happened to me back in 1997 and that was facial scarification.
“I have searched the scriptures in connection with “tattoos or scarring of our bodies, and here is what I come up with, and I hope that you can see the spiritual teaching from the Holy Spirit, even though it is a physical thing that one does to his body, but it is not approved of by God:
Leviticus 19:28 (NIV) 28 “‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.
Notes for Verse 28 Verse 28. Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead — The practice of making deep gashes on the face and arms and legs was universal among the heathen, and it was deemed a becoming mark of respect, as well as a sort of propitiatory offering to the deities who presided over death and the grave. The Jews learned this custom in Egypt, and though weaned from it, relapsed in a later and degenerate age into this old superstition (Jer 16:6).
nor print any marks upon you — by tattooing, imprinting figures of flowers, leaves, stars, and other fanciful devices on various parts of their person. The impression was made sometimes by means of a hot iron, sometimes by ink or paint, as is done by the Arab females of the present day and the different castes of the Hindus. It it probable that a strong propensity to adopt such marks in honor of some idol gave occasion to the prohibition in this verse; and they were wisely forbidden, for they were signs of apostasy; and, when once made, they were insuperable obstacles to a return. —Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary.”
